When I was a small child maybe five or six, I would tell everyone I saw walking a dog “I like your dog.” My parents would say it was my catchphrase. Even now, every time I see a dog on the street, a part of me lights up inside. I may have lost the childish impulse to run up and say it out loud, but the feeling has never gone away; I still love them all and working with them has always been the dream. Over the years, that simple childhood love has grown into something much bigger. I spent countless hours volunteering at the SPCA in New Zealand, then more years working in kennels and daycares, plus dog walking come rain or shine. Each dog taught me something, whether it be about patience, kindness, playfulness or trust.
But I've learnt the most from my own dog. Growing up, I always wanted a dog of my own. I must have asked my parents a thousand times, and eventually, they gave in and that’s how we got our family dog, a beautiful border collie called Sergei. He was the sweetest, most chilled-out boy you could ever meet. And the beginning of my lifelong love for collies and herding breeds in general.
Looking back now, I realize just how lucky I was with him. He made having a dog look so easy. He was gentle, patient, and calm; the kind of dog you could take anywhere and trust completely.
Now, years later, I share my life with my husband and our dog Moose who is an Australian Kelpie, Moose has been my greatest teacher yet. He’s clever, driven, and full of life. He’s shown me firsthand what it means to meet a dog where they are.
Through training him, learning what motivates him, what makes him feel safe and what challenges him, I’ve come to appreciate just how much goes into raising a happy, well-adjusted dog. Moose reminds me daily that every dog is an individual with their own needs, instincts, and quirks.
I’m endlessly passionate about learning about dogs, about how they think, feel, and learn. There’s always more to understand, always new ways to help them thrive. Growing my knowledge means I can help more dogs and their humans live happier, easier lives together and that’s all I’ve ever wanted to do
